Dr. Ter Meulen is an experienced consultant neurologist who has joint King’s College Hospital after being a full staff member for more than 15 years at the OLVG Teaching Hospital in Amsterdam, The Netherlands. Dr. Ter Meulen diagnoses and treats the full range of neurological disorders and has a special interest in chronic (neuropathic) pain, migraine and cluster headache. He is known for his empathic and holistic approach to his patients.
Dr. Ter Meulen studied medicine in Belgium and The Netherlands and as a student he also attended two prestigious US institutions: Northwestern University in Chicago and the Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York City. After university he specialized into Neurology at the Erasmus Medical Center (Rotterdam, The Netherlands), a leading hospital in the field of stroke neurology and neuro-immunology (MS, Guillain Barre syndrome and auto-immune encephalitis).
Along with his clinical work as neurologist (from 2009 on) Dr. Ter Meulen has worked as a researcher- his PhD-thesis on sciatica was finished in 2024- and was vice-chairman of the local residency program (neurologists-in-training). He also has a special interest in medical ethics: dr. Ter Meulen co-founded and chaired the Amsterdam hospital ethics committee and has led numerous moral case deliberations within the setting of the Neurology Ward and ICU. He co-authored the handbook on medical ethics (in Dutch).
Over the years he has published about 70 papers in both English and Dutch languages. Topics include sciatica (randomized controlled trial and economic evaluation), phantom pain, neuropsychiatry, ethics and Islam. See publication list for details and open access titles.
