Our anaesthesia service supports every operating theatre, the obstetric suite and the critical care unit. Each patient is assessed in our pre-operative clinic where the safest plan, general, regional, neuraxial or sedation, is matched to the procedure and your medical history. The team is consultant-led for high-risk cases, with modern monitoring and recovery facilities to UK standards.

Questions before you book.

  • Yes. The anaesthetist meets you in the pre-op clinic and again before the procedure to confirm the plan and answer questions.

  • Spinal, epidural, regional nerve blocks and sedation are options for many procedures, with the choice based on the operation and your medical history.

  • Yes. Modern obstetric epidurals are very safe and widely used. We discuss benefits and risks at your antenatal anaesthetic visit.

  • Both increase peri-operative risk. We optimise you in the pre-op clinic and tailor anaesthesia and recovery to keep you safe.

  • Most patients are awake within minutes of general anaesthesia ending, with full recovery over a few hours. Spinal blocks wear off in 2–4 hours.

  • No. You must arrange a responsible adult to take you home and stay with you for 24 hours after any sedation or anaesthetic.
